THE HOGARTH FAMILIES OF WEST KILBRIDE AND BUTE

by Martyn Taylor of Hampshire

I would like to hear from anyone having new information, or corrections and enquiries. Should genuine researchers wish to learn more about these branches, I am, likewise, happy to correspond with them directly.

The story has it that these HOGARTHs, being fishermen, migrated from West Kilbride to Bute following the herring shoals and that James HOGARTH, Mary MALCOM and their family made the journey in two fishing boats - one for the family and one to carry all their worldly goods.

Their common ancestors are James HOGARTH and Isabella WALLACE who married in April 1786. No link has yet been found with the Ardrossan and other Ayrshire HOGARTHs, although one may well exist. There may also be a link with the Berwickshire HOGARTHs, in view of the fact that James Crawford HOGARTH (b 1856) found himself a wife there.

The linkage of the West Kilbride and Bute families is, as follows.
