WILLIAM JOHN HOGGARTH

William John Hoggarth's service record

This is William John Hoggarth's Naval Service Record which I found at Kew.  The son of William Cooper Hoggarth of Whitby, he is the boy who won the medals that I later 'won' on eBay and whose obituary in the Whitby Gazette can also be found in this section.  I am absolutely certain of his identity, since his service number matches what's engraved on the medals and his death date matches the obituary.

However, the birth date on the Record is wrong - he was actually born on March 17, 1901.  Assuming one had to be 18 to join the Navy, he must have lied and was therefore only 15, thus dying just one week after his 16th birthday.
