WILLIAM JOHN HOGGARTH'S MEDALS

William John Hoggarth's medals

Shown above, are the service awards made to William John Hoggarth which came to light on eBay in November 2004, when I was eventually successful in 'keeping them in the family' as it were.  During WWI it was the custom to award an inscribed plaque on the occasion of death in service and, fortunately, both WJH's plaque and pocket-watch also formed part of the auction lot.  It is thought that fewer than 500 plaques were awarded to servicemen of his young age.

Accompanying WJH's effects in the auction were a pair of Mercantile Marine medals awarded to John W Readman of Whitby.  These are also shown in the picture.  After I had bought the medals, I discovered a message from Wiliam John Hoggarth (Bill) in the Guest Book.  Bill is the nephew of William John and was named for him and he was able to explain the Readman connection.  John W Readman was the son of Eleanor (Nellie) Hoggarth & Mr Readman.  William John, Nellie and Bill's father Henry Hoggarth were all children of William Cooper Hoggarth & Hilda Harrison.
