A number of interesting items, relating to the Hogarths in
Berwickshire, that were researched for us by Jeanne Faletti and Nicky Johnson from the original documents located in Berwick Records offices. I've also added some notes that Bryan Hoggarth initially posted to the Noticeboard.
An oddity found in the Berwick Archives was a 'List of Incomers claiming Meadows and Stints, at Michaelmas, 1834'
It lists: Names: Geo. Hogarth, Profession: Farmer, when entered: 18 Mar 1834, came to town: 18 March 1834, When made free: 5 Dec. 1794, Remarks: (blank).
(It is possible that Haymount was rented to someone else
around this time.)
Notes on claiming "Meadows and Stints" by Bryan Hoggarth:
In Terrick Fitzhugh's Dictionary of Genealogy, it refers to
"Gates" and "Waste" and for Waste it says - The land of a Manor, not devoted to arable meadow or wood. It usually lay on the manorial boundaries and was used for pasture, and was gradually assartd (brought under cultivation) over the centuries. As the population increased during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, some of the waste was used for new villages. In 1236, the Statute of Merton allowed the lord of a manor to enclose part of the waste, provided he left sufficient for the needs of his free tenants. As the waste decreased, many manors had to limit the number of beasts each tenant was allowed to graze on it. These limits were called "stints" or "gates".
My guess would be that the later date is the time of application and the earlier date could be when this person became a freeholder, or the land which he had at the time of the application became freehold. 1851 Census of Berwick
I found the following Hogarths in an index of the 1851 Census.
Agnes Hogarth Wi M 76 Nbl Berwick 255
George Hoggarth So U 31 Vet.Surg.Nbl Berwick 482
Bryan observes that the number at the end of each line
represents the folio, which may be used to identify the position of an entry on the microfilm of the census. Furthermore, arranging entries by folio will then group individuals into what (probably) were people living in the same house. 'Ml' is likely to mean Mother in law, but it is not certain what the 'Ci' for Janet Hoggarth, stands for.
