Militia List:  Andrew Hoggarth, Carter, Gordon 20.
The above list of men, between the ages of 18 and 45, were liable to be called on to serve in the Militia during the Napoleonic Wars.  Ten regiments were raised after an Act was passed in 1797 followed by five more in 1802. It was at this time that men in the above age group became eligible for five year's service.  Country parishes had a ballot system to fill the ranks when there were not sufficient volunteers.  If a man had sufficient means it was possible to pay for a substitute to take his place.
