Comments: I notice that in 1740 Ruth TOPCLIFFE married Philip HOGGART. I'm a descendant of Ruth's younger sister Catherine. The girls were part of a collection of eight children of Henry TOPCLIFFE (7 girls, one boy). Both girls were mentioned in their father's will: Catherine got 20 pounds and Ruth got "utensils & husbandry gear".

Comments: Hi,

What a fantastic site! I have just spent the last 3 hours on here and love it all.

I have recently discovered that my Great, Great Grandmother was a Hoggarth and I'm just setting off discovering all who went before her (hopefully).

GG Grandma's name was Ann Elizabeth Hoggarth (b.c.1850) and she married Matthew Wedgewood (b.c.1847). Their granddaughter (my grandmother) was Edna Annie Thorpe.

I'd love to hear from anyone connected.

Best regards

Comments: Morning Hogwashes, and greetings from sunny Delhi.

As alluded to in these august pages; I have the honour to be a Hog via my grandfather, Company Sergeant Major Frank Hoggarth of the Royal Artillery, originally of Hull I believe, and his son, my father (no, really?!) Philip Granger Hoggarth (b.1932) - who still lives in our family home, 'Lisnacrieve' in Robin Hoods Bay - and mother Jean (nee Taylor, b1935, d2004, Requiscat in Pace - yes Mother, I know I'm a gobby individual, back to your harp).

Beyond Frank, or 'Pop' as he was, apparently, universally known in the Army, our Hogwashness becomes a bit hazy as our family name is actually Moorsom, via Harrison, and Ventriss (Ventrice?), all of Robin Hoods Bay, with a healthy leavening of Estills, Storms and others thrown in for good measure, right back to Granger Moorsom, shipowner, of RHB in the C19th, and Captain Robert Moorsom, Collinwood's No.2 at Trafalgar.

I was born in Ferriby and now live with my family in Pocklington, both in the East Riding, but, having grown up there, will forever regard Bay as my home 'town'.

My 5yrs younger brother Roger Philip (b.1963) is something frightfully important in IBM and lives in Cary NC, USA.

Keep up the good work and, if you've a few hours (weeks?!) to spare, broach the subject of Whitby area genealogy with my brother-in-law, Geoffrey Estill, of Aislaby, in the Parish of Fylingdales, archivist at the Whitby Archives (get thee to www.whitbyarchives.org.uk/index.asp and support this vibrant local resource, I thank you!), who will, incidentally, be pleased to undertake research into your past, in their capacious database, on your behalf dear reader, for a few of your Earth s.

Fare thee well.

Comments: I would like to research the Hogarth Family Tree. I was told the origin of 'Hogarth' was Keeper of Pigs (Hog Guard!) not sure, but I know it is a Northern name, possibly Northumberland. I married into the Hogarths in 1969 and my Father-in-law started to trace the family but unfortunately after he died, all records seem to have disappeared.

If anyone from the Newcastle (or similar) area can help I would be very grateful. My Father-in-Law was Norman Albert Hogarth (known as Norrie and married Joan), had a brother Ken who married Margaret and they had a son called Michael, who was in the Police Force and two daughters - one called Catherine and another whose name I cannot remember. Norman & Ken's Father was called Albert. I cannot remember the name of his wife, but she had a sister named Emma.

I married Joan & Norrie's eldest son, Barry and he had a Sister called Jill (now deceased) and a Brother Trevor. After years of working for other people, we now run a Bed & Breakfast in South East Cornwall.

It would be fantastic to hear from someone who could provide a starting point for me to try and put together a family tree and I look forward to hearing from you.

Comments: I am interested in the Sweet Family from Yetholm Scotland from whom I am descended. Robert and Anne Sweet came to Adelaide, Australia on 18 January 1854 on the "Anne McLean", a barque of 320 tons, having left Glasgow on 2 october 1853.

They bought with them their children John Sweet, Catherine Sweet, Mary Shirra Sweet and Jane Hogarth Sweet.

Jane is the connection with people who come to this site.

She married Alexander McDonald and lived at "Newton" near Callington in South Australia. She was a teacher a place near Callington called Woodchester when she was a young woman. She died in 1911. Her brother John was a saddler in Callington. He died in 1919.Robert and Anne are buried at the Woodchester cemetery in South Australia along with Jane.

Anyone with similar interests please email me.
I have done a search on "Sweet" on this excellent site but am unable to get the authors as links not happening prior to 2006

Comments: Hi,

My relation was Thomas Hogarth, born in Whitby in 1826. I have his mates certificate of service, dated 4-Apr-1854. It's very fragile, so I can't put it on the internet. He married Ann Jefferson and they had a daughter called Mary Hogarth born in 1859. She married Johnathon William Winkcup and they had a daughter Frances Winkcup. She is my great grandmother and that is my connection to the Hogarth family tree. It would seem that Thomas died sometime before 1881. We don't know that much about the Hogarths, but what I have found out is very interesting.

Comments: I was just curious as to where my soon to be husband's name originated from. Although he was not born a Hogarth, he has never known to be anything else and carries the name with some pride. My baby son also carries this name and his soon to be born little sister will also be a proud Hogarth in a little under 4 months. So I thought I'd see what I was getting myself into before I take the leap of faith.

Comments: HUNGRY HOGARTHS? Never heard them called that in my home town of Saltcoats, adjacent to Ardrossan. The sobriquet most probably came about from their "house" flag.

Whilst serving as 2nd Officer onboard "SS Baron Jedburgh" my great-uncle James McCreadie, also from Saltcoats, was awarded the Royal Humane Society (RHS) Bronze Medal (RHS Case No. 44016) for an incident at sea which occurred on 28 Jan 1918. RHS medals are awarded in recognition of outstanding acts of bravery in the saving of human life. I would be extremely interested in any Company records relating to the incident.

Regards and thanks.

Comments: I know very little about my father Anthony's family other than that his own father was called Edmund and was from Newcastle. As a keen horseracing enthusiast my interst in the Hogarth name (and the reason for my stumbling on to this noble site) was piqued by the exploits of the Yorkshire based trainer Harry Hogarth, a farmer/breeder from Stillington who now seems to be doing very well for himself since taking out a license five years ago. I had initially wondered whether we may be related but upon seeing no mention of him on your site thought that your visitors might be interested in following his horses anyway. Of course I take absolutely no responsibility should they happen to be very slow...

Go to www.racingpost.co.uk and search for "trainer" "hogarth" or check regional news.
