Comments: Hi everyone. I am 42 years old, married to Hilary and have worked in the City for the last 18 years. My family live in Coventry (yes, I am a Coventry City supporter) and my father, Norman Hogarth was born in Edinburgh. His tartan is Hogarth of Firhill. I have to say though that I feel more English than Scottish, but I am proud of my heritage. I have a twin sister, an English teacher at a Kent Grammar school. Chess is one of my big passions and the team team I set up last year won the inaugural 4th Divison of the 4NCL (Four Nations Chess League) www.4ncl.co.uk. The team is Hilsmark Kingfisher, sponsored by the business I run, Hilsmark Business Solutions. I am running three teams this year in the 4NCL and our 1st team, strengthened by the presence of two top English Grandmasters plus two notable International Masters are leading Division 3, whilst our 2nd team are leading Division 4. Like most Hogarths, I am driven by challenge. If someone says we cannot do something, we go ahead and achieve it! I have played both 1993 World Chess Championship contenders, England's own GM Nigel Short (drew with him) and the formidable GM and ex-world champ Garry Kasparov (narrowly lost to him after a pawn up!) Comments: If you have a query it is better to put it on the Noticeboard. Then people can post a reply to it on the Noticeboard. Others will be able to folow what is being discussed and may find the information useful or be able to add more from their own records. Even if there is no immediate 'linking' someone may come along in a years time and match in with what has been discussed. If someone replies to a query direct by email to one person they may end up having a wonderful time swapping information but this will be lost to the other HOG*s around the world. I think one of the reasons why the HOG* families from the west side of England do not seem to be amalgamating so well as those from the East is because they are not sharing their information with everyone. Comments: I am the Second Cousin of Sergeant Leslie Hogarth who was killed on a return bombing of Duisburg in the Second World War.  The Whitley 5 he was flying in pitched into the sea and all 5 crew were lost. His name appears on the memorial at Murton. I believe this branch of the family had connections with Boldon, and that Leslie's brother Stanley may have been born there. I am the granddaughter of Edith Hogarth who married Edwin John Burton of Eaglescliffe. She was widowed early when Edwin John was killed in a motorbike accident in York.

Comments: I'm looking for information about my maternal grandfather, Edward Wharton Hogarth, born (probably) in Northumberland, UK, in 1868.  From there he immigrated to South Africa and worked on the railway during the Boer War.  He corresponded with my grandmother, Ellen Creed, who I think was 4 years younger and was still living in England.  They met through her former employers, who were then living in South Africa.  Ellen sailed out to South Africa to marry Edward. They had one child there, who died at the age of 6 months.  Then they returned to England, had a daughter (my aunt Selina) in 1902, and two more daughters, Ruth and Lillian, in 1911 and 1912.  Ruth is my mother.  My grandfather died in Victoria BC in 1943 and my grandmother Ellen in 1954.  My mother died in Victoria in 1986.  It may seem as if I know lots of information, but I'm trying to search records for three countries!

Comments: I was born in Whitby, North Yorks in 1948. My grandad was Henry, who farmed at Airy Hill farm on the outskirts of Whitby. I think he originated from Egton, but my dad (Tom) has done a bit of digging around so I'll ask him next time I see him. I think my g-g-grandad wad pretty well known; he went to the USA and did well, and when he came back to Whitby he contributed regularly to the Whitby Gazette - I have some of his poems that were published in it. Comments: I receive the Hogarth Gazette but this is the first time I have had time to explore Rod's website. I have intended to research my family tree for some time but seem to have no time due to my other commitments. So far I only have what has been handed down to me be heresay and can only go back as far as my Great-Great Grandfather who was Luke Hoggarth who I understand farmed in Egton. My Great Grandfather was William Hoggarth (village blacksmith in Glaisdale) who lived to the grand age of 100. My Grandfather was Atkinson Hoggarth who founded A. Hoggarth & Sons, road haulage company. My father was Francis Hoggarth also a haulage contractor. If anyone can fill me in on my particular branch then I would be most grateful. My brother Stephen and myself plus respective spouses hope to attend the Hog(g)arth weekend in September and will bring along the few historical items that may be of interest. Comments: Researching the Hoggarths in Hibbert Township of Perth County, Ontario. Richard Hoggarth married Betsey Helson about 1870.They farmed near Cromarty in Hibbert Township. Betsey died in 1931 and Richard in 1932 and both are buried in the Helson family plot in Staffa cemetery.I have photos of the grave site. So far have found only one descendant, Louisa born 31 May 1895 in Hibbert.

Comments: I posted a note here a few years back and, in the meantime, have found my great great grandfather's name was Julius Hogarth. He was from Denmark and changed his name from HOUGAARD. A distant relo of mine contacted me a while back from Melbourne by my old email and I have now lost your details (both our fathers' names were Desmond). Please email me again because I would like to send you the "Gold" information I was telling you about. Apparently Julius left behind a wife named Catherina and a son called Hagbarth. He then married Charlotte Tegg in Sydney and my Great Grandfather was born - Ingomar Rudolph. My Grandfather (Poppy) was George Ingomar Rudolph and My Father Desmond George. I have other bits and peices, mainly from John Wade who contributed to the exhibition book "Gold". Julius was an artist - a jeweller and silversmith. He lead a fascinating life in Sydney and Melbourne and seemed to be just a little famous, sometimes. I am looking forward (when I finish my degree in a hundred years' time)to delving more into his life and family. Sharyn Walker

Comments: I was born in Omaha, Neb. in Dec. 1941, my father was also born in Omaha in Dec. 0f 1908. His parents came to Omaha from Port Glascow Scotland on 1905.
