Comments: Just having a wander around to see if there were any others of us sharing this name. Family comes from Lancashire, I think, at least. I'm aware that from my great-grandparents downwards, they have all been Lancashire born and bred. I wouldn't mind being e-mailed by visitors to the site, so if anyone wants to drop me a line, feel free! When I've a spot more time I will try to add some further details about the family background. Take care! John H. |

A relation was attached to Charles Dickens, but old family gossip stated that they were the other side of the family!!! My grandfather's brother went to USA/Canada in the late 1800's...but I would not even know his name.. except from Scottish Border country and was a miner, or Mine Manager. Best wishes all. Comments: I am trying to track the ancestry of my GG Grandparents (Joseph Hoggarth 1786-1856 and Agness Bailiff Hoggarth 1793-1852). They came to Ontario, Canada, in about 1846 from Westmoreland County, England. Later moved to North Dakota, USA. They were accompanied by five of their six sons; John, Joseph, Robert, Benjamin, and James. I do not have the name of the son who stayed in England. Any information previous to approximately 1846 would be appreciated. |

Comments: Glad to see there's a HOGARTH site. I just found out my Ayrshire grandmother's middle name. It's HOGARTH! Her name was Elizabeth Hogarth Greeenlees, before marriage, Mrs.Lochhead after marriage. You'd think I would have noticed that middle name in the twenty years she lived upstairs! Scottish naming patterns mean grandma must have had a Hogarth in her background. I'm doing genealogy, looking for that Hogarth connection, somewhere in Ayrshire before 1870. Comments: I appreciate being able to read all about the Hoggarth clan. My Great Grandfather, Joseph Hoggarth and wife Grace Williams came to Ontario from England in the early 1800s then to the USA shortly after. My Grandfather, also Joseph, was married three times. My grandmother, Mary McKaig, was his second wife, and was born in Scotland. My father, Benjamin Harrison Hoggarth, was born in North Dakota in 1888. He was one of nine children between the three wives. My father and mother migrated to the state of Washington in 1923 where they had five children, I being one of the five. I have alredy located a distant cousin, Stephanie Alstead, by way of this Website. I have a copy of "A Hoggarth Geneology From 1786-1986 by Florence Horgan, a distant cousin. This book covers the Joseph and Grace clan from the time they came to Ontario until l986. I look forward to more cantacts from Hoggarths, or Hogarths. Comments: All of these Hogarths and noboby has mentioned the Hoggarths in the Glenfield / Kensal area of North Dakota, USA! Joe Hoggarth born 1825 in England (possibly Lancster) is my g-g- grandfather. He and his wife Grace Williams/Williamson (born 1826 - also in England) moved to Goodrich, Ontario, Canada then to Grandin, North Dakota, USA (maybe around 1887) then to the Glenfield/Kensal, North Dakota area. Joe and Grace had 12 children: Joseph, Benjamin, Zachariah, John, Robert, James, Richard, William, Thomas, Agnes (Mrs. Don McKinnon), Margaret (Mrs. Joe Thurlow), Sarah (Mrs Dan Clancy). Four of the brothers (William, Thomas, John and Zachariah Hoggarth) were living in Glenfield, North Dakota in 1900. Three of these brothers (William, Thomas & Zachariah) married three sisters (Nettie, Amanda & Eva Timm). Eva & Zachariah are my ggrandparents. With all those kids there must be more of us out there. I'd love to hear from you. |

Comments: My great great grandfather was a Richard Hogarth from the town of Avoch on the Black Isle in Scotland, where he was a tailor. He emigrated to New Zealand in the 1860's with his wife, Anne Young, and their son John Young Hogarth. On some official records he is named as Richard Hoggart. I would be interested to hear from anyone who could tell me more about the family... either Hogarth or Hoggart. (I believe Hoggart could be a var of Haggart which was a sept of Clan Ross, which would make sense owing to where they came from, and also from the fact that John Young Hogarth named his children Anne Ross, or Malcolm Ross, etc. |

Comments: My grandmother was Dora Hoggarth who married Rev. John Barlow in 1899 in Lancashire, England. Dora Hoggarth was the daughter of John Mattinson Hoggarth from Grange near Lancaster and Elizabeth Jane Askew. Most of my Hoggarths came from Longsleddale, Westmorland. For instance, John Mattinson Hoggarth was the son of John Hoggarth and Margaret Mattinson, who were married November 12 1827 in Longsleddale, Westmorland. There were lots of brothers and sisters to John Mattinson Hoggarths. The Barlow family came to the USA in 1911 and settled in Brooklyn N.Y. Have lots more to share with someone in this line of Hoggarths. |

Comments: Hi. I was born Sharyn Majella Hogarth; My Dad was Desmond George Hogarth (1938-1990, Sydney Aust.) His Dad was George Ingomar Rudolf Hogarth he was born in Australia. His Dad was Ingomar Rudolf Hogarth and I know he was married in 1899 in Australia. and died 1938 Australia. His Father (which I have just found on the net) was Julius Hogarth and he was married in Aust. in 1858... that is all I have, but I think my Dad told me that his Great Grandfather (which would be Julius) came to Australia from Denmark. Other interesting facts - the "Hogarth Gallery" in Sydney is in Walker St., which is my married name (and this is very encouraging as I am also a budding artist). There was a fellow called Burne Hogarth who created Tarzan comic strips (he was the 2nd creator - I learned this from the net in my search for all things Hogarth). |

Comments: It's me again. I just found some info on your site about my family - "Hungry Hogarth's" founders of the Baron Line. In fact, I have a small book that profiles the founding of the company and their entire fleet of ships from their very first wooden, tri-masted sailing ships that made runs from Scotland to South Africa. I'll see if I can compile some info. Here is a small piece from another web-site about Ardrossen - Ardrossan Town Trail Map: The Town Trail starts on the promenade at the Stanley Burn, which is the boundary of the town. Facing the sea front is St. Andrews Episcopal Church, opened in 1874 and adjacent is St.Peters R.C. School, formerly Ardrossan Academy. Walking along the promenade notice the large mansions of the early 1800's, built for the business men and merchants of that era. One in particular, the Verona Fathers house No. 8, was originally the home of Hugh Hogarth the shipping magnate and founder of the Baron Shipping Line. Next door to No. 8 stands the Church of Scotland retirement home. |

Our great-great- grandfather started Hogarth Shipping in the mid 1800's. Does anyone know anything about Hogarth Shipping? |

Comments: This is my second posting (I hope I'm allowed to do that). I found a little more info about my grandfather Joseph F Hogarth. I found a prayer book with "Manor House, Aislaby 1878" hand-written in it. He was born 3/17/1871. He came to the US sometime before 1891. Anyone with any info about him or any other Hogarths in that area. I would love to hear from you. I have also been told that my family was related to the famous artist William Hogarth (painter of nudes?). Oscar Wilde also, but that's a whole other story. Hope to hear from someone soon. |

Comments: I am related through my TAYLOR line to a branch of the Hogarths that moved from West Kilbride, Ayrshire, to North Bute in the 19th century. One member (James HOGARTH) became a well known trade union leader in Glasgow in (?) the 1930s. I haven't discovered this Ayr/Bute branch on this website yet (or anything about this James), although the Berwickshire branch MAY be distantly related. I live in hope. |

Comments: Hi. I am interested in finding information about my Grandfather Augustus Louis Hogarth who was born in 1866 and resided in Richmond, Victoria, Australia. He was married to Ada Lewis, born in 1874 in Sydney, Australia. My father, Ernest Robert Hogarth, born in 1900, was their youngest son. My father had a brother Roy and sisters, Grace, Lillian and Merle and they lived for a short time at 118 Waterloo Road, Sydney. Merle married a grazier from the New England Tableland and lived on a property called Kentucky Downs. More Hogarths live in Victoria than any other State in Australia. Perhaps one of you is related and I would be pleased to hear from you. |

Comments: Hi. We are looking for one of our long lost ancestors. His name was Henry Edwin Hogarth who married in Dunedin, New Zealand about 1910. He originated from England prior to this. He married Mary Anne Nicholl from London. They were both aged 38 when they married. This makes his birth year about 1882. He may have originally come from The Isle of Man. I'm 16 years of age. If you have any information, or are related to him, please e-mail us. Emily Hogarth |

Comments: Yes, my name is Hogarth too. I'm 19 years old and very curious about my last name, because it doesn't suite me. Suite you? How so? Well I'd like to first start off by saying that I was born in Haiti (Caribbean). My fathers name is Henry Albert Hogarth. His Father, I'm not sure what is name was, but he died early in my fathers life. My great uncle had been tracking down our family name, and traced it to the northern England, Scotland area. I remember him telling me that the name meant something like "rulers of the highland". He had a picture of the crest, but i dont have it or remember how it looks like. My father does, i think. My father still lives in Haiti but travels between there and florida frequently. I remember my dad telling me he found out that the first Hogarth that came to Haiti was the late 1800's i think around the 1890's or so. Our family on the island was considered highclass. I'm full Haitian (my mothers ancestry comes from france, she doesnt know her tree history, but her maiden name is ROY, which means king in french i think), but i dont look it, i'm a mutt of a mutt of a mutt. I was wondering if any other links of the Hogarth family migrated farther than Europe or America. I was just curious to see who was the first hogarth to come to the Caribbean. If anyone knows, or has a missing link of some sort, it would help. Thanx. -Vic |

Comments: Very interested to discover the Hogarth website as I have spent ages trying to piece together details of my GG grandfather Thomas Hogarth, who was born and originated in the Blackpool area and flitted around between here, Machester and South Wales. I have more information which I will place on website if possible. I am trying to establish links with Hogarth and Sully family and have only anecdotal evidence at this stage. Comments: Here in the Northern Ireland there are only two Hogarths in the phone book so it's good to see some others out there! My father moved here from England in the '70's and was unfortunate enough to be named "Garth" after my grandfather. I have one brother and no sisters, and have also been told that I am descended from William and Dickens (although not together, obviously - that would be far too weird). I'd be interested to hear from any other far-flung Hogarths who are as sick of having their names pronounced and spelt wrong as me. |

Comments: I work for the US Postal Service as a letter carrier. Just the other day I came across another Hogarth. I was shocked, but then I e-mailed my family and told them about it and asked if anyone else has come across another Hogarth in their travels besides one of our relatives. Not one of them has. I almost felt violated. I thought our family was the only one that had the name. Then my Aunt Peggy sent me e-mail of this site. (She is our family historian). I guess I am glad. I am not used to sharing my name with other people! Although it is interesting to know there are others. |

Comments: It was a surprise to have found a webpage for the name of which I'm quite proud. I have wanted to travel to England for the past five years to try and locate the village, or area, where the name originated. My uncle now deceased, told me he had found a Henry Hogarth or a Louis Henry Hogarth or a George Hogarth, I've forgotten which, that had travelled to Haiti back in the the late 1800s, around 1860 something. He was an English teacher and apparently founded a school in Les Cayes, a town on the southern coast of Haiti. He also told me the name meant "dweller of the high enclosure". I'm interested in knowing where in Scotland, or Northern England, the name first appeared. I would also be extremely pleased if anyone out there could lead me further on these tracks. My uncle passed away a year ago and I have no direct access to his papers, so my knowledge is very limited. |

Comments: Having recently found the Hogarth site, I thought some of you may be interested in the little research that I have, concerning my family history. I can trace back to Joseph Hogarth, born in 1801 of Joseph and Ann Hogarth and Baptised on 29th November 1801, in the Old Church, St.Pancras. He married Ellen Taylor on 19th April 1827, at St. Luke, Old street, Finsbury. Their son John Joseph was born in 1832 and baptised at the Old Church, St.Pancras on 17th October 1832. He Married Ann Maria Dixey in 1864. Their son (My Great- Grandfather), Charles Henry, was born on 7th January 1870, at 59 Warden Road, Kentish Town. He Married Elizabeth Williamson at Chorlton registry office on 13 Sep 1902. |

Comments: My Short Hogarth Family History: ALEXANDER HOGARTH Born: 9 August 1826 Scotland (I don't know where!) Died: 18 May 1896 in Lapeer County. Married: November 1861 to Helen Turnbull She was born: 11 November 1838 in Canada. She died: 15 September 1912 They are buried in Fox Cemetery, Burnside Township, Lapeer County. Children: Mary Ellen, born 1863. Robert A, born 1865. Lillian Luisa, born 1 January 1873. Alexander was born in Scotland and then went to Canada before moving to Lapeer County. In 1867 there is a warrenty Deed showing the purchase of land by Alexander, so it is known that he was in Lapeer County by then. Mary married John Thompson of Brown City, Michigan, but they had no children. She died 28 June 1942 at the age of 79 years 2 months and 7 days. John Thompson was born in 1861 and died in 1918. They are both buried in Evergreen cemetery, Brown City, MI. Robert Hogarth died 15 December 1872 and is buried in Fox Cemetery. Lillie married Robert McArthur and the Hogarth family history is carried out in that family. Does anybody know anything about my Scottish Alexander Hogarth? Please help! |

She was the daughter of Thomas Hogarth born 1813 in Egton and Hannah Wedgewood. Thomas is the son of Peter Hogarth born 1773 in Glaisdale and Ann Harrison. Comments: I have just found this site. I started tracing the Hogarth name to find my birth mother. I was adopted in 1952. This I have now done succesfully. I am now continuing because my real family know so little about their past. Isaac Hogarth was my great-grandfather. He was born 13/11/1871. He married Jane Smith in Whitby on 01/07/1899. Isaac's father was Thomas and they lived at Horse mires Head Farm, near Aislaby, Egton, North Yorks. |

Comments: I've just stumbled onto this great web site. Well done! I too am searching my family tree. I am originaly from a small village called Rookhope, Weardale, Co.Durham, where Hogarth's are plentiful. Weardale is known for it's lead mines which, alas, are no more, I have managed to trace 'my' Hogarth's back 6 generations, luckily they had lived in the same area, and worked as lead miners, farmers and blacksmiths...so with a search through the local church records, then onto the computer and the good old GENUKI website. It's been quite easy....until now. I originaly started out, trying to find out where and when the Hogarth's came into Weardale, rumour has it we appeared with the Scottish raiders...hence the search for an answer. My stumbling block is... Robert Hogarth Isabel Potts m.29/5/1784 at Lee St.John [a Hexham Parrish] This is the first of 'my' Hogarth's that have not been born in Weardale...so my next job is to find out where he was born. After reading the Berwickshire Hogarth's I feel there could be a real link here, as all my Hogarth's have the same christian names, generation after generation... James, Robert, George, John, William. I'd be grateful for any help. Jean |

Comments: My system decided it didn't like my scanner and spat out my server. Started with a clean C drive and lost the address of the home page. Now I've finally had the time and the inclination to find it again. I'm originally from Bedlington in Northumberland - the home of the Terriers. I believe this branch of the family originated in the Borders (trouser or kilt side I know not). Family apparently were originally quarry owners / stonemasons and ship owners (Hungry Hogarth's). Matthew Hogarth of Bedlington was my grandfather and William Hogarth my father. The only surviving male Hogarth of my father's era is now John Hogarth (brother) residing in Newcastle. If anyone wants any more detail feel free to contact me. |

Comments: Hi! I stumbled on your fascinating site while looking for something completely different, but then that's the beauty of the internet, is it not? (No! It's an all too easy way to waste your Saturday afternoon, but there we are.) I am awful at remembering who all my relations/ancestors are. Your site has got me back into thinking that I need to draw out a HUGE family tree to stick on my wall and learn. I'm quite lucky in that my great aunt (Margaret Denham, see jh_desnd.htm) and Grandfather, have done lots of research into my Hoggarth and Hobbs roots, respectively. Anyway, I must get back to looking for a set of timpani for my college music society (as I said, it's a long story!) Best wishes, Matthew Hoggarth |

Comments: Here's the deal. My husband is Seibert M. Hogarth, Jr. His dad was Seibert Sr. Seibert Sr's dad was Richard Ernest Hogarth, who came over from England, with his brother, around the turn of the century. Richard was a veterinarian and married Nellie May Garrison in Pueblo, Colorado. Here the trail ends cold. Nellie and Richard didn't get along; Richard deserted the family, Nellie fell ill and the children (my father-in-law and two sisters) were put in an orphanage. We have tried to find out what happened to Richard, or where he came from in England, but because my father-in-law was so young when separated from his parents, we have no information other than what I have just stated. Do these names sound familiar to anybody out there? Do any other Hogarths know about this family? We would love to have any information about the Hogarth clan that anybody can give us. Thanks! |

Comments: I don't know if this is of any interest to anyone or if anyone can help me. My great grandfather was Joseph Hogarth. He came to the United States from England sometime in the mid to late 1800's. I wish I had more information, unfortunately my grandmother Agnes Hogarth Eck passed away before I started to get into my family history. If I find out more and anyone would be interested I will forward the information. |

Comments: I'm interested in the Roxburghshire Hogarths -- so far no known connection with the Berwickshire lot. I have traced my own line back to Robert Hogarth, who married Mary Cranston in 1748. His son James married Isobel Fox (b.1762). James's son James married Margaret Craig (b.1800) in 1820. This James's son Robert married Janet Fortune (b.1821). Robert's son James married Annie Mauchline in 1872. His son George married Isabella Cannon. These were my parents. |

Comments: Hi, thought I'd return the compliment. Nice to see other 'Garths just as curious as myself. I believe there are currently about twenty villages still using the old term Garth, i.e. Fishgarth, Lintzgarth etc across Cumbria, Durham and Northumberland. Too much on your site to read in one go so I'll be back soon and may exchange one or two ideas. Best of luck with the research to all Hogarths, worldwide. |
